Understanding Lu, Quan, Ke, and Ji

The Four Transformations describe how themes change and move in Zi Wei Dou Shu. They are commonly named Lu, Quan, Ke, and Ji. Introductory explanations often reduce them to good fortune, power, reputation, and misfortune. That is easy to memorize but overlooks the opportunities, investment, responsibility, and cost that each transformation may carry.

Lu: attraction and resources

Lu often relates to resources, interest, ease, and willingness to invest. It may show that a theme receives more attention, but preference can also lead to overinvestment. Useful questions include: Where do the resources come from? Are they used effectively? Does comfort create dependence?

Quan: influence and responsibility

Quan emphasizes initiative, leadership, responsibility, and influence. It can support execution, but may also appear as pressure to control or difficulty delegating. The issue is not simply possessing power, but how influence is used, how responsibility is shared, and whether others have room to participate.

Ke: expression and visibility

Ke often concerns organization, learning, expression, standards, and social visibility. It can help a theme become understandable or recognized, but does not automatically create reputation. Real results still require ability, work, communication, and environmental support.

Ji: friction and persistent concerns

Ji is often treated with unnecessary fear. A more neutral reading is that a theme may involve repeated attention, friction, misunderstanding, burden, or difficulty letting go. It can prompt stronger boundaries, fact-checking, and alternative plans rather than announcing disaster.

Return the transformations to the whole chart

The star and palace receiving a transformation, and whether it comes from the natal, decadal, or annual layer, change the level of discussion. Schools may also use different transformation tables. Treat transformations as areas of emphasis rather than independent prediction tools.
